Measure the room – Before doing any purchasing and cutting it is always best to first do the measuring. It is important that you measure both length and width in order to determine the needed carpet size.

Prepare the floor – Make sure that the floor is cleaned. Ensure that the floor is undamaged by checking for squeaks. You will have to repair any damaged areas you find. If left alone, these areas will ultimately damage your carpet.

Install tack strips – Place tack strips parallel to wall edges. Do not install them in front of door openings. The tack strips should be consistently around ” from the walls or baseboard.

Install the carpet pad – In order to protect the carpet and give it cushion you must install a carpet pad. Starting along one wall, roll out your carpet pad or carpet cushion. You have to make sure that you overlap the tack strips a few inches. Make sure you have no wrinkles in your pad. Bunching can be prevented by taping the seams. Stop about every 2 feet to thoroughly staple the padding. When the carpet pad is secured, use a carpet knife to cut the excess padding along the tack strips. Make sure that the pad do not overlap the tack strips.

Install the carpet – Same as installing the carpet pad, roll out the carpet along one wall making sure you leave an excess of about 3 to 4 inches that should overlap along the walls. When multiple sections are needed you will need to make a seam. You can do this by placing seam tape under the seam. In order to melt the adhesive on the seam tape, fastening the carpet ends, you can use a steam iron.

Tack the carpet down and trim – Don’t trim the ends of the carpet before you have tacked it into the space left between the tack strip and baseboard. Use the knee kicker to install the carpet to the tack strip. The carpet can be stretched over the tack strips using a power stretcher. Now the carpet may be trimmed, use your carpet trimmer and trim only the extra along the wall. The edges of the carpet need to be tucked with the stair tool now. You can’t neglect the doorways; prevent fraying by installing door edge strips.

Now that the carpet has been installed, make sure you vacuum it.

Follow certain steps in order to make carpet installation easy and fun. You have to use the right materials and the appropriate tools to achieve the result you are looking for.

Reclaimed Wood Flooring – A Great Sustainable Choice

March 1, 2011 · Posted in home improvement remodeling · Comment

Sustainable Reclaimed Wood Flooring I genuinely can’t get enough of hardwood floors in my home. While the hardwood floors are so appealing, I know that in order to use them it means that forests are cut down and not much forest management is in place to replenish the tree stands.

So, when I heard about reclaimed wood flooring, I got truly excited. I just love it when we encounter a product that allows us to have our cake and be able to eat it too – and that is just what reclaimed wood allows you to do. If you are planning a new home with wood floors or a flooring upgrade for your existing home, be sure to keep reclaimed wood flooring on the top of your list – you will be happy you did!

Reclaimed Wood – Just What is it? What is outstanding about reclaimed wood is the fact that it is diverted from our landfills, or saved from being disposed in some other manner such a burning or just left to rot. As we demolish bridges, barns, old building, industrial structures, etc. the wood in these structures are typically just disposed of in the landfills and of use to no one.

Well, someone thought that using that wood again may just be a good idea – and they were right! There are suppliers that take this old wood, and rehab it by means of repairing it, milling it and create floor planks that are sold to homeowners for flooring in their new and existing homes. You can obtain a wide variety of wood species and finish options with this type of flooring, and using the wood is a outstanding option for anyone.

What Makes Reclaimed Wood Floors Environmentally-Friendly: Floors are eco-friendly first and most importantly because this flooring type permits for the use of wood that would otherwise be disposed of. Giving new life to an old product that is destined to the landfill is about as environmentally-friendly as you can get. Less trees will be cut down as people utilize this eco-friendly option in the construction of their homes.

Because it is older wood, it is of much higher quality the new wood that is presently sold. Old-growth hardwood typically came from virgin forests with very large trees that had a large quantity of quality wood. The longer a tree was able to grow, the stronger the wood it produces. Because of this quality, it creates reclaimed flooring that is very tough.

What is the Cost of Reclaimed Wood Flooring? The cost of reclaimed wood flooring is going to vary widely, depending on the type of wood you purchase, and the level of finish – just like regular hard woods. It is very important to know that you will probably not pay any more for reclaimed wood flooring than you would for new wood flooring.

It will likely cost you somewhere between $3.50 and $7.00 a square foot depending on the factors noted above. If installing a wood floor is of interest to you, you will take outstanding pleasure in the installation of a reclaimed wood floor as it is no more difficult to install than a traditional wood flooring system.

Things You Should Consider: As this wood has been recycled, and has been used before, it is likely that there may be imperfections or marks in the wood. Manufacturers typically mill the wood and prepare it for flooring use, but the imperfections remain. Many people feel that these imperfections and marks give the flooring character and it is often a selling point for the wood.

When you select your stain and finish products for your flooring, take care to pick low VOC products. If the products you use to finish your floor have high levels of VOC’s, you will experience off-gassing of the volatile organic compounds for many years.

Virginia Roofing ? Infrared Technology Simplifies Inspections

December 19, 2010 · Posted in home improvement remodeling · Comment

Considering the importance of the roof on your home, it?s startling to know that most homeowners throughout Virginia pay little attention to the roof over their heads. Unfortunately even common wear and tear can create small areas of damage that can quickly turn into big problems. For this reason, it?s a good idea to have your Virginia roofing inspected by a qualified contractor or inspector that is able to utilize infrared inspection technology.

Regular inspection, especially infrared inspection, can help stave off problems caused by moisture. When you live in an area like Virginia that gets frequent wind storms and heavy moisture on an annual basis, it?s a good idea to make a concerted effort to maintain the roof. Thermal infrared inspections can help you easily locate damaged or failing areas of your roof that creating heating issues and let moisture in.

Once damage occurs and the roof is compromised, it doesn?t take long for the damage to spread throughout the attic of the home. What starts as a simple repair costing you perhaps a few hundred dollars can turn into a full scale renovation with a Virginia roofing contractor ? not to mention the damage to the other parts of the home.

For finding these little issues, thermal infrared inspection is the method of choice. A thorough non-thermal inspection can find these issues but it?s tedious and involves the close inspection of the shingles. The infrared system is based on assessing the thermal mass of the roofing materials and it can be done from the ground level as long as the roof is visible from various angles.

With a damaged roof, inner material including insulation will became wet and remains damp. Wet substances have a higher thermal mass. When compared through infrared, the different in the temperature variance can be easily spotted between the damaged areas of the roof and the dry roof structure. If caught early, these areas can be quickly fixed, saving you the cost of a new roof installation.

Because the difference in temperature is so slight, it?s also important that you focus your attention on contractors and Virginia roofing inspectors that use quality materials and equipment. This isn?t a time when you want to cut corners just to save a buck.

The health of your roof is vital to the structural integrity of your home. Never base your decision to hire a Virginia roofing contractor or inspector based on price alone. Always do a thorough check on skills, experience, equipment and references to make the best choice for your infrared roofing inspection.

How to Care For Your Granite Countertops

December 18, 2010 · Posted in home improvement remodeling · Comment

Granite is one of the easiest countertop surfaces to maintain. It is really tough to scratch and can withstand extremely hot temperatures. With proper care and maintenance the condition of the granite can remain brand new looking for years.

Preventing a Stain:

The very best method to avoid stains on your granite countertop would be to wipe up spills immediately, prior to they penetrate the surface. When wiping up spills, use a soft clean cloth over the granite surface. Also, sealing your granite countertop can stop stains from forming. The countertop must be resealed each and every year or two with a non-toxic sealer on cooking areas. As a general rule of thumb, an impregnating sealer should be applied to all natural stone.

Removing a Stain:

While it’s tough to scratch the granite countertop surface, it can possibly stain if spills aren’t wiped up. Cooking oils and acidic substances including wine, fruit juice, coffee, and coke can all cause the granite surface to stain if spills aren’t properly cleaned. Usually hot water works well for quick clean-ups. Dish soaps may be utilized to clean spills, but repeat use can dull the shine of the countertops and also trigger build-up.

House Remedies for Eliminating Stains:

Begin by mixing up a cup of flour and 1-2 tablespoons of dish washing soap with water to make a thick paste. Distribute the paste over the stained area of the granite countertop and protect with plastic wrap. Let the covered paste sit overnight on the stain. In the morning, scrape away the mixture with a wooden utensil and wash the area off with water.

If the blemish is oil based, use peroxide in the paste in lieu of dishwashing liquid.

If the stain was due to wine, ink, or other non-oil based products, you can mix molding plaster and pure bleach into a paste and spread over the affected area. Let the paste sit for about 30 minutes, then remove and rinse the area off with water.

Avoiding Heat Damage:

Granite is recognized for its ability to withstand heat. Usually a hot pot or pan may be taken directly off the stove or from the oven and put onto the countertop. However, while extremely rare, it is possible for any granite surface to suffer “thermal shock” and crack. In order to prevent this from happening, place hot pads under pans and pots.

November 16, 2010 · Posted in home improvement remodeling · Comment

A plain boring house becomes a home only if it is beautifully designed and if it goes with the personality of the owner. The interior design and beautification of a house can say a lot about the personality of the owner so you must be careful while undertaking this exercise.

It is not a particularly difficult task to think of fresh, practical, and creative ideas about interior design. You can seek help from published material on this topic and from interior design experts while undertaking this job. However if you plan to do the designing yourself, here are a few tips that will help you out.

The first step is to choose a theme that suits your aesthetic sense. Your attempt should be to find a style, which matches your lifestyle. For instance, you can either pick detailed European style woodwork which will lend a classical look to your home or you can go for a modern design which will ensure that the area in your house does not go waste.

The colours should support the theme that you have selected. Go for brighter colours if the house is small and receives less natural light. If you like shades which are dark then you can make use of artificial light in form of lamps to give a shadowy feel to your house.

The furniture in the house must match your preferences, but while selecting it, do not overlook your and your family members’ needs. If you live in a studio then you must make use of foldable and multi-purpose furniture which will serve several requirements without covering too much space. If your home is larger then you do not need to worry about the size of the furniture, but never forget the functionality aspects.

The drapes, curtains, wall hangings and floor mats must all be selected with care to go with the overall look and feel of the house. Always be careful and choosy while designing your house, after all it is a reflection of your own personality.
