How To Use A Store Bought Drapery

December 15, 2010 · Posted in home remodel · Comment

Choosing the right drapery for each window in your home is not easy to do but there are ways to determine which draperies would look best for your room. Whether you are an expert designer or you are just trying to make your home look nice, you can find the best pair of window treatments to hang in your room.

To determine what size coverings you will need, measuring will need to be done. You need to measure where you want the window treatments to hang; the outer side of the window is usually the most popular choice. You want them to hang evenly so your measurements must be precise. The general rule to always remember is to measure twice so you can be sure of your numbers.

Your next decision will be about style. The style you choose will depend on your preference. You can choose from panels, valances, or both. In the past, the main look consisted of two panels per window. Later on, a valance was the only covering chosen. Today, a combination of both panels and valances are necessary to complete the look.

Tall windows can be hard to dress sometimes because the length is too long to find coverings to fit. Windows are not always square; they come in several sizes and shapes. You may like the look of a blind and a valance to dress your window. If you want to allow more light in your home, you may want to use a simple valance as your choice of coverings.

Choosing the design of your window coverings can be fun. IF you are decorating with a certain theme, then you can coordinate your curtain to match that theme. Some examples of themes include rustic, cottage, western, retro, or Victorian. The colors you choose will depend on the style of your room. If you go with a theme, you can add that theme to your window treatments or you can use a solid color or neutral color to balance the look.

You want the room to look balanced when you walk into it. Nothing should stand out in particular when you look around the room. Neutral colors like cream or beige are used when you need to balance the room with the right amount of colors, especially if you use a primary color on the walls, furniture, or room decor.

You can make a difference in your room by changing each drapery every season. You may want to cover your window with light material for spring and summer and lined material for fall and winter. There are so many choices to make. The lining in window coverings can range from silk to flannel. The purpose for the lining is to keep the cold out and help the heat to stay inside, cutting down on the cost of heating a home.

When changing your drapery set, make sure to keep the ones you take down in case you want to put them back up in the future or if you change the look of your room, you may find that the ones that you took down actually match the new look better.

Shopping For Home Decor

November 28, 2010 · Posted in home remodel · Comment

Just over a decade ago trying to purchase suitable home decor was a real pain. You were either limited to catalogs being delivered to your mailbox or you had to travel to each store. Now with the Internet you can browse most stores via their website with a few clicks of the mouse. You are no longer limited to a few hundred items but can instead choose from thousands, if not hundreds of thousands. Getting the right look for your home is now simple and fun. Here are some ideas for every space in the home:

Living Room Think of your living room as the canvas on which you are going to create your masterpiece with the home decor you choose. Decide how you want to feel when you enter the room and you will have a good idea of which accents to go for. Do you want a sunny, energizing look, a calm, soothing ambience, or do you want the room to reflect your interests and hobbies? Browse all the home decorating magazines and cut out photos that inspire you.

Before you begin selecting home decor accents, consider the room’s lighting. Add to the mood of the room by carefully selecting the right lamps and sconces. The next thing to consider is the window shades and floor coverings that will achieve the desired ambience. Then finish off by selecting the right accents to enhance the mood you’re going for.

Bedrooms Bedrooms have the unique ability where they can have their own theme without detracting from the rest of the house. You could have a nautical theme in one room and in another you might like to try an ancient Egyptian style. Your imagination is really your only limit. Candles, blankets, wall art, decorative pillows and ornaments can all help to bring the theme of the bedroom to life. Meaningful items you have received as gifts, family photos, treasured books and religious ornaments will also help make the theme more meaningful.

Dining Room or Kitchen The heart of the home is wherever families gather to eat. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the formal dining room or just the kitchen table, choosing the right ornaments that are both pleasing to the eye and have a more utilitarian purpose is essential. If you don’t want to decorate around a theme, you may consider having your kitchen decor revolve around a certain color palette. You can then select all the elements of that room so they go together with your chosen color scheme.

In the Garden It’s becoming popular to extend the living area of your home out into the back garden or patio. If you are lucky enough to live in a moderate climate you can bring the indoors out with furniture, lighting and other home decor and enjoy it throughout the entire year. Other items you may enjoy in your outdoor area include bird baths, fountains, chimes and porch swings which will all enhance the enjoyment of your outdoor space.

Final Shopping Tips Shopping online for home decor is a great way to get decorating ideas and the perfect way to find a huge selection of products. You could even get some great bargains for high quality items.

Introduction To Modular Burglar Alarm Systems For The Home

September 16, 2010 · Posted in home remodel · Comment

Many people today are concerned about the security of their homes. Some families have nobody home during the day, everyone is at work or school. Other people worry more about someone breaking in to their house at night when they are asleep. Burglar alarm systems are intended to address those fears by detecting and reporting apparent break ins or attempts at break ins.

Burglar alarm systems have sensors that are connected to a central control unit. The sensors are activated as needed. When they are active, if they detect a condition that could indicate a security problem, they notify the control unit. The control looks at the global pattern of which sensors are signalling what, and determines if there is a significant probability of a real problem. If so, it will raise an alarm, either locally, or at a centralized security station.

Several kinds of indoor motion detectors may be used. The body heat from an intruder may be detected by a passive infrared detector. Motion detectors create ultrasonic or microwave fields. A moving object within the field will probably create detectable disruption. Photo electric beam detectors can sense if something moving has disrupted their beam of light.

Breaking glass often indicates some sort of problem. Glass break detectors can sense the unique sound pattern associated with this. Some burglary alarm systems can detect threats other than burglary. Smoke, heat, or carbon monoxide detectors may detect a fire or carbon monoxide from a malfunctioning appliance.

Most home systems primarily use indoor sensors. A number of types of outdoor sensors are also available. Some of them are based on the technologies used for indoor systems. The usually sense efforts to go over or through a wall or a fence.

The sensors need to be able to talk to the control unit. Either wired or wireless technology may be used. Of course wired connections require running wires, but they do cover the power needs of the sensors. Wires can be cut. If there are frequent health check messages between the control and the sensors, cut wires can be detected and can trigger alarms.

Wireless connections are easier to set up. They may or may not be easy to disrupt, depending on the specific technology used. They generally require more technical sophistication to disrupt. With wireless system, power must be provisioned for the sensors, either via connection to line power or via batteries.

The control unit should be able to notify someone of problem conditions. Locally this can be done by a very noticeable light or an auditory signal such as a siren or buzzer. It may also send a message to the local police station or to an alarm company security station. In some cases, direct connection to the police may not be allowed.

The user must have some facility for turning the system on and off and for modifying the configuration. It is common to have different scenarios for night time, day time with people home, and all people gone. To avoid false alarms, it must be easy to tell the system when the last person leaves or the first person arrives.

Those are the basics of burglar alarm systems. If used properly, such a system can be a great tool for increased security. If it is well set up it should have minimal impact on everyday life.

Croc Hides Make Some Good Stuff

August 16, 2010 · Posted in home remodel · Comment

As you may have already heard, crocodiles are on the Endangered Species List. This 200 million year old reptile, which has existed on the planet for all that time with little change to its form, was almost rubbed out during the 20th century. In the years between 1900 and 1967 crocodiles were nearly hunted to extinction. Fortunately laws were enacted to reverse this trend and they’re slowly making a comeback but they’re not out of the woods yet.

Crocodiles are unique and fascinating. They’ve changed little in their 200 million years here on earth and remain almost prehistoric in nature. They’re found all around the globe including such places as Africa, Asia, Australia and both North and South America. Their numbers in the wild are steadily dwindling in most parts of the world.

Crocodiles and alligators are similar in many respects and most people don’t know one from the other. They are, in fact, in different genealogical families altogether, although they are first cousins. The easiest way to tell one from the other is by the coloring. Crocs are lighter-colored, usually appearing as a light olive brown. Gators are darker and appear to be almost black in color. Looking at the snout you’ll notice that an alligator’s nose is U-shaped and broad. A crocodile’s is narrower, more tapered and resembles a ‘V’.

Alligators and Crocodiles can both be very dangerous but the gators seem to be less aggressive and will usually attack only if provoked (or hungry). Crocs, on the other hand, are known to be quite territorial and the males will aggressively protect their territories. They are faster than you might think and are responsible for killing many people each and every year (especially in Africa).

Crocodile hides have been used for some time in the manufacture of certain items including croc wallets, briefcases, luggage, shoes and handbags. These products are imbued with a special touch of distinction and, when well made, can be very pricey and yet many feel well worth the price. A well-made item fashioned from crocodile leather can last a lifetime if properly maintained.

Crocodile watchbands are certainly uncommon but always striking. The hides from these prehistoric creatures render leather accessories of uncompromising quality. Pulling out a croc wallet, for example, will never fail to turn heads and let those around you know you have a certain sense of style.

By the way, skins to make croc accessories aren’t typically hunted down in the wild. The animals are now raised on farms (mostly in southeast Asia) where their purpose is to sacrifice their lives for the meat and skins that are collected and used in several different manufacturing processes. The meat is considered a delicacy in many countries. The leather goods created are in a class of their own.

Points About Exactly How To Clean Your Rattan Chairs

July 18, 2010 · Posted in home improvement · Comment

It is quite unusual for something to be beautiful and durable, like Rattan Chairs are. They still do need to be cleaned once in a while to make sure that their quality does not deteriorate.

It is recommended that rattan chairs made out of natural materials should be cleaned every two weeks. It ensures that its overall aesthetic value is maintained and unchanged. Having a vacuum with a brush attachment would help you clean your chair and remove dust. A small amount of dish-washing soap diluted in warm water should be enough to clean its surface.

The surface of the water should be clear of any excess bubbles. Gently wipe the chair’s surface with a damp cloth making sure that the wood does not get too wet.|Be gentle in wiping the chair’s surface using a damp cloth so that the wood does not get too wet. It would be wise to clean the crevices and grooves with a tooth brush or other smaller brushes since they are prone to dust accumulation.

Make sure to immediately look after your rattan chair if it sustains any major damage or stains. You should quickly deal with stains with a detergent and cloth. Any serious damages should be dealt with warmed linseed oil so that the cracks or split wood will heal and moisture is regained in the same area. You can also opt to take a look around in your local home improvement centers to look for other products that can help you with the maintenance of your rattan chair.

Although Rattan Chairs made out of Synthetic Materials look much like ones made out of Natural Materials, they differ much in their maintenance. For example, Synthetic Rattan Chairs do not require extensive maintenance. They can easily be maintained with mild soap, warm water and a soft cloth and can be left outside to dry in the sun.

You do not need to worry about spills and water exposure too. They are not perfect chairs, and their quality will still deteriorate if they are frequently exposed to harmful elements such as water and spills. You can find in the fabric care section instructions for the cleaning and maintenance of the cushions and materials.

You can also use rubber stoppers and put them underneath the legs of your Rattan Chair. Your Rattan Chair is also ensured that it will most certainly not experience any unnecessary damages such as splitting and cracking of the wood. Rubber Stoppers will lessen the pressure between pressure between the ground and your chairs. Natural Rattan Chairs are meant for indoor use while Synthetic Rattan Chairs are for outdoor use, do not confuse them with one another.

Reasons To Be Conscious Of High Pollen Flowers

July 9, 2010 · Posted in home remodel · Comment

Many people are excited and relieved that spring and warmer weather is here, however there are just about as many people who are not happy about the change in temperatures because with warmer air brings allergens like moulds and especially pollens. There are several reasons to be conscious of high pollen flowers when the weather turns from cold to hot and when a homeowner is thinking about planting a flower garden or blooming plants and trees around their house, it is best to stick with the low or no pollen blooms.

What gender a plant is has a lot to do with how much pollen it produces and how much an allergy sufferer could be subject to. Who knew plants had gender, and, unlike what most people would think, it’s the males that produce the most pollen, in the flowering process.

Hundreds of the fruitless or seedless trees, shrubs and plants are males and will help in the control of a landscapes pollen count. Female species of plants, trees and shrubs could be messier; however they produce far less pollen than the males. A garden shop or nursery should be able to tell the homeowner which vegetation is male and which is female. Not all plants marked seedless or fruitless will be male, for example, the Ginkgo tree, found in Canada and select place in the Untied States, comes in both male and female versions. Flowers in London Ontario normally have low pollen.

When choosing blooming plants to place in a landscape that will help to keep pollen down and allergies at bay, choose those with a tube or trumpet-shaped flower like the morning glories that are bred in a variety of colors including lavender, white and pale yellow.

There are many pollen-free plants that have flowers such as chrysanthemums, and, there are also several different low-pollen breeds of blooming plants like daffodils, impatiens, begonias, poppies, peonies, tulips, sunflowers, nasturtiums, zinnias and clematis crocus.

If shrubs and trees are more suited for a homeowner’s yard, then pollen-free and low-pollen versions include crabapple, cherry, magnolia, peach, willow, female versions of yew, ash, pear, dogwood, redbud, plumb, some maple and juniper. In addition, some holly with red berries also makes a good choice for limiting pollen count in a landscape.

Check with the plant nursery and ask about foliage that have flowers which attract butterflies rather than bees because the butterflies do not create or carry as much pollen as the other insects.

There are several hedges and trees that will not bloom if kept pruned back year after year; the boxwood has a highly allergenic flower but will not bloom if it is pruned heavily each year.

Plant fungus, rust, mould, black spots and other diseases which grow on plants will reproduce by spores that could cause allergens. Again, ask the nursery workers to point out the disease resistant plants because less disease means that the air around the plant will be healthier.

Above are just a few of the many reasons to be conscious of high pollen flowers and how to prevent allergens from ruining outdoor plans for spring, summer and fall.

American Eskimo Puppy

July 7, 2010 · Posted in home remodel · Comment

I would like to quote something ‘To each, his or her, own dog’. That might not mean much to a person who has never been a dog owner but it is true for every dog owner in the world. It means that all dog owners believe that their puppy is the cutest, most adorable, the friendliest dog etc. The list is just infinitely long but let me sum it up by saying that I have an American Eskimo puppy, aged 10 months, and it is the cutest, most adorable and the most stand-up comedic dog!

That’s right, I’ve coined what might be a new phrase in the land of dogdom, however I don’t expect it to go further than my very own American Eskimo puppy. From the very first day we brought her home, to this day it’s been one riot (of laughter by the way) after another. Like I said it started the very first day, when she fell into her pint-sized tub of milk. Now that’s she’s older and larger it’s sometimes difficult to believe that she was ever that small, but luckily I have pictures!

Before proceeding further and getting an American Eskimo for yourself, it is important that you come across certain facts related to American Eskimo puppies. It is very important that you decide whether you really want an American Eskimo puppy or you can make do with a Boxer or an Afghan hound.

It s very challenging to own an American Eskimo puppy, and finding out that it is an average shedder is very important especially for people allergic to dog hair. Another thing that needs to be kept in mind is that your American Eskimo puppy would need a lot of grooming. It would require a grooming session at least twice a week and daily at the time of shedding.

It is important to realize that in case there is some kind of grooming lapse, then this breed will shed its un-brushed hair without any sort of compunction. So it is necessary to groom them well.

You will soon realise that the cute and adorable American Eskimo puppy you own is also quite intelligent and is one of those dogs that can be trained very easily. One thing that needs to be kept in mind is that they are a playful breed and need a regular exercise regime.

If handled properly, and people-trained when they are still young, your American Eskimo puppy will be a great asset to you, and a loyal companion. The best thing that I love about these dogs however, is the small swagger they have when they’re walking, as if the thickish mane of fur around their necks leads them to believe they are the lions of the dog world!
