Not merely there is a substantial savings in generating your own personal electricity but there is also a palpable satisfaction derived from knowing that you are engaging in your part to reduce your own carbon footprint.

Wind turbines operate simply by kinetic energy which only denotes that the blowing wind catches the blades of the rotor and makes it turn. That energy through that rotating motion is captured and modified straight into electricity. The electricity that is certainly captured can be stored and will supply energy even when the wind will not be blowing and the blades of the turbine are still. Many people report that they conserve to 80% with their DIY wind turbine. Several perhaps generate sufficient electricity using their wind power system to entirely cover their electricity bill each month. And what is the best scenario of all? One can generate enough power from your wind turbine to not only pay your utility expenses but also to market the extra electricity to your utility company. Are There Any Real Advantages of Solar Power for You

March 2, 2011 · Posted in affordable home improvements · Comment

Because of the advantages of solar energy it has become the new buzz word all around; it along with other sources like wind and others has suddenly come into the limelight. This is not just some advertisement gimmick; there are some real benefits to be had from using solar energy. The first is the fact that this is an abundant source of energy. So abundant that just the total energy that falls on the earth’s surface can power all our present needs by over 35,000 times. This means our present energy demands, which we are having a tough time meeting using traditional solutions can be easily solved by solar energy.

Whenever people talk about solar energy, renewable and sustainable are a part of the discussions. A renewable energy source means an energy resource that does not require human intervention to replenish – it can do it naturally. Sunlight never gets exhausted, so it does not need replenishment. You can use it as much or as little as you want and you will still have lots of energy left.

A sustainable energy resource is one which can be used to fuel present needs without compromising the future generations. Solar energy is a clean and abundant energy source which will never exhaust. Besides it is a very clean energy source – so tapping it today does not jeopardise the future of this planet in any way. It is a sustainable source of energy in every sense of the term.

We all know that America is one of the top producers of greenhouse gases in the world, but do you know that nearly half of the fuel needs of this nation are supplied through imports. It is expected that this number will rise to 66% in the coming decades. Moving to solar energy helps reduce this dependency on fossil fuels. Besides, it helps keep you power bills low. Also, having a solar powered house is a great asset when it comes time to sell the property. With so many people looking to get a greener home, solar equipment in your house does add to its value.

You can insulate yourself from the electric power bills by using solar energy. With sun powering your ecofriendly house, you need not worry about hikes in power bills anymore. Regardless of what the local utility company charges, your costs will not change since you are relying on sun for your power. Every house that moves off the grid onto the solar power nets the nation energy savings since there is a lesser need to import fuel. By opting for solar energy you are also reducing your carbon footprint in the world. Given that the average American has an 18 ton/year carbon footprint; this is a lot of pollution for us to bring down.

It is interesting that one a regular sunny day, 1 square meter area can trap as much a 1kWh of power/hour. During a sunny day, you can probably capture 6 kWh of total energy from this same surface area. The average home needs about 30 kWh a day This means that a 5 square meter area can actually generate enough power to run your house.

Electric power continues to be the most widely used form of power. Recently there have been a number of devices and technological advancements developed with most of them relying on solar electric power. Solar power can be readily transformed into electric power to drive all these appliances and satisfy these demands. Interestingly, the demand for power rises in the hot afternoons and solar equipment work with maximum efficiency during that time. So this is an ideal technology to meet the peak time demands for power.

If you really want to tap into all these benefits, this is the right time to do so. Government is urging people to adopt such new technologies. There are a lot of incentives, rebates and other attractive options government is offering to people moving to solar energy.

Thermal Solar Power Systems

February 3, 2011 · Posted in affordable home improvements · Comment

The term thermal solar power refers to systems that convert solar radiation into useful heat. This is also referred to as passive solar energy. It is a different type of system from solar power electricity, and whose usefulness should not be overlooked.

The field of thermal solar power is large, and ranges from a simple system to heat your water tank, up to full fledged steam power facilities in use today. With a little thought, one can imagine a wide variety of applications for thermal solar technologies.

For small scale applications, thermal solar power is used in the home. The heat is used to maintain hot water tanks, or is stored in the floors or walls of our buildings.

There are other good uses for thermal solar power which we expect to increase in years to come. One is pebble bed heat exchangers, which act as a thermal storage bank for converted heat. This gives us some system capacity and operating flexibility.

Applications for pebble bed heat exchangers include radiant heating in and around our homes. They can be integrated into greenhouses, saunas, or even in your family rooms. Pebble bed heat exchangers are made from natural materials, and can be an attractive feature in any home.

The typical operating temperature for most thermal solar power systems will be between 100F and 180F. In good solar climates these temperatures can be easily achieved with popular off the shelf equipment. With more specialized equipment we can go in excess of 250F, and with high performance industrial equipment over 700 degrees is possible. These high performance systems are usually for making steam, but incorporating them into other processes is also possible.

At the core of any thermal solar power system will be the solar collector. This is the component directly responsible for generating your heat. The most common design is the flat plate absorber, which often have selective surfaces for high absorptivity and low emissivity of solar radiation. Other designs include evacuated tube collectors, and parabolic trough concentrating receivers.

The solar collector will transfer heat to a circulating fluid, whose flow is driven by a small pump. Depending on the system design temperature and operating environment, this fluid may be water, glycol, or oil. The circulating fluid is like the life blood of thermal solar power system by moving the energy to all the users.

Anyone seriously interested in energy independence should start with thermal solar power technology. The components are simple and inexpensive. If you could identify your climate as having reasonable amounts of Sun, then thermal solar power is encouraged to the fullest extent.

Thermal power systems are typically less expensive than solar power electricity, and can create household hot water and heat reliably. With the addition of pebble bed storage and higher operating temperatures, then the amount of potential uses suddenly becomes many. With the markets of sustainability re-growing their roots we expect to see a variety of new designs and installations in years to come.
